Where to find second hand couches in Cape Town & makeover tips
Are you looking for second hand or used couches in Cape Town, but don’t know where to look? In this article, we’ll show you where to find couches, what to look out for, and give you some makeover tips. There are so many ways you can bring a vintage couch to life!
A quick word about used couches
Sometimes you can find used couches in great condition. Just give them a good clean or hire a cleaning service and your couch can look brand new. We’ll talk more about makeover tips below. However, don’t expect to buy a second-hand couch that looks brand new. Unless you are buying it from someone you know, chances are it will have some wear and tear and require some upkeep. Sometimes it could be in storage and look great. Otherwise, be sure to shop around for prices and negotiate if possible.
Some furniture shops aren’t big on online promotion. More often than not, you’ll find some amazing second-hand furniture shops in Cape Town at fair prices. In Bellville around the Northumberland Road area there are many used furniture shops. Alternatively, a quick search in Google will yield the best results. In fact, you’ll find lots of second-hand furniture shops in and around Cape Town. What’s great about finding couches in these shops is that you can go and look at the condition on the item before purchasing.
Gumtree – OLX
South Africans love selling stuff on Gumtree, Olx, and other online classified websites. Browse through furniture listings in Cape Town, contact the seller and negotiate on the price if possible. Often you can find great deals this way, but be sure to double-check the quality of the couch.
Similar to Gumtree and OLX, people also sell second-hand furniture items on local Facebook groups. These are great places to get awesome deals, but again, make sure to ask the correct questions. Ask for more images if needed. Ask if there are any scratches on the frame, material issues, etc.
Makeover tips for used couches
You can find couches at great prices when buying second hand, but make sure you’re prepared to put in some work. You’ll need to clean your couch. Sometimes you might not be able to get a certain stain out or need professional help.
If the upholstery is beyond cleaning, you might want to consider reupholstering it. We’ve done it on some old chairs and it turned out great. However, it’s a lot of work! You also need to go and buy material, tools and possibly get some help if it’s your first time. Alternatively, you can have the cushions reupholstered. Be sure to sand down the couch and give it a new coat of paint, if it has a wooden frame.
Lastly, after you’ve done cleaning the couch, why not put one of our couch covers on it? If the cushioning is still in great shape and you don’t want to spend a lot of extra money on reupholstering it, our slipcovers can help you revamp the couch in minutes!
